Pedagogy is the study and theory of the methods and principles of teaching.

Pedagogy is the discipline that deals with the theory and practice of teaching and how these influence student learning. Pedagogy informs teacher actions, judgments, and teaching strategies by taking into consideration theories of learning, understandings of students and their needs, and the backgrounds and interests of individual students.

All of these definitions of pedagogy are centered around studying teaching. “Voice pedagogy” would therefore be centered around the teaching of voice. The methods, activities, and art of teaching are therefore the bulk of the content of university voice pedagogy programs and voice teacher conferences, right? Maybe? Say what? Oh.

  1. Thank you for this post. I can’t say what others do, but this private voice teacher has made it his life’s work to study the methods, theories, thinking, and studio procedures of legendary vocal maestri—which has been a fascinating and rewarding journey.
