Power, loudness, projection, or whatever the heck “big” means
Hello singing colleagues! I’m back from some time off and refreshed, ready for new beginnings after a nationally horrible first half of the winter.
Powerful singing is a topic that seems to have a hundred facets for everyone who is a singer, teacher, or peanut gallery critic. It is a holy grail for many singers. From the latter 19th century through the present day, it has been a constant theme in voice technique. In Episode 8 of The Voice Culture Podcast released today, Justin and I discuss the definitions, nuances, (and lack thereof), technical aspects, and human lust for power. We can generally agree that strong voices can be impactful, whether good or bad. But there is a lot of, shall we say, variability, in how to get there.
